CV & Résumé Development

A document that represents your capability accurately.

A young African graduate drafting a curriculum vitae on a laptop with printed documents on the desk

Overview

What this area of our work covers.

This area helps young people produce application documents that describe their capability clearly and honestly. It covers structure, evidence, wording, tailoring for a specific role, and the presentation standards recruiters expect.

AYCADO delivers this work because a weak document ends an application before any assessment of the person takes place. Most young people write a first curriculum vitae with no example, no feedback and no understanding of how it will be read, then use it for years.

The approach is corrective rather than cosmetic. Participants learn to identify what they have genuinely done, describe it in professional terms and remove the padding that makes a document harder to trust.

Who it is for

  • Students preparing a first curriculum vitae
  • Recent graduates applying for professional roles
  • Job seekers whose applications are not producing interviews
  • Young professionals updating documents for a change of role

Learning objectives

What participants work towards.

  • Structure a document that a recruiter can read quickly and confidently
  • Describe study, work and project experience in evidence based professional language
  • Tailor an application to a specific role without misrepresenting yourself
  • Meet the presentation and accuracy standards employers expect

Key areas of development

Where the development happens.

Structure and layout
Ordering sections, controlling length and making the important information easy to find.
Evidence and wording
Turning responsibilities into demonstrated contribution, with specifics rather than adjectives.
Tailoring
Adjusting emphasis for a particular role and reading a job description properly before applying.
Accuracy and honesty
Representing experience truthfully, including gaps, which is both ethical and safer at interview.

Practical experience

How it is practised.

Each participant works on their own document throughout. They draft, receive line by line feedback, revise and compare the result against a real advertised role.

Participants also review one another's documents, which teaches them to read as a recruiter reads and improves their own writing more than feedback alone.

Career relevance

Why it matters for work.

A strong, accurate document increases the proportion of applications that reach interview stage. It also prepares a young person to speak about their own experience coherently, because the work of identifying and describing it has already been done.

Participant experience

Sessions are practical clinics rather than lectures. Participants bring what they have, however incomplete, and leave with something materially better.

Programme delivery

How it is delivered.

  • Application clinics and small group workshops
  • Individual written feedback on documents
  • Peer review exercises
  • Online sessions and remote document review

Expected outcomes

What participants should take away.

These are development outcomes. AYCADO does not promise employment, certification or any guaranteed result.
  • A completed application document of professional standard

  • The ability to tailor it credibly for future roles

  • Clearer language for describing your own experience

  • A stronger platform for interview preparation

Why this work matters

The wider significance.

Young people are frequently told to be ambitious without being shown how opportunity is actually found, applied for and secured. They write applications no one has ever reviewed with them, attend interviews they have never practised, and build networks by chance rather than by intention.

Career development work is unglamorous and highly effective. Teaching a young person to describe their own capability accurately, target the right roles and prepare properly does not guarantee a job, but it removes avoidable disadvantage. Over time it changes how a whole cohort of young people approaches the labour market.
