Media, Journalism & Communication

Telling a story accurately, and to a professional standard.

Overview

What this area of our work covers.

This area develops capability in media and communication work: interviewing, writing for an audience, producing simple audio and video content, communicating an organisation's work and the ethics that responsible media requires.

AYCADO delivers this work because communication now sits inside almost every organisation, and because young people producing content already have reach without always having standards. Accuracy, fairness, consent and attribution are learnable and consequential.

The area serves young people considering media careers and those who will simply need to communicate an organisation's work credibly.

Who it is for

  • Young people interested in media, journalism and communication
  • Students producing content for institutions or societies
  • Young professionals responsible for communicating their organisation's work
  • Entrepreneurs communicating their own enterprise

Learning objectives

What participants work towards.

  • Interview and gather material accurately and respectfully
  • Write and structure content for a defined audience
  • Produce simple, competent audio, video or written pieces
  • Apply ethical standards of accuracy, consent and attribution

Key areas of development

Where the development happens.

Interviewing and research
Preparing, asking questions that produce useful answers and verifying what you are told.
Writing for an audience
Structure, clarity and tone appropriate to the format and the people reading it.
Simple production
Recording, framing, editing and publishing at a competent standard with available equipment.
Media ethics
Accuracy, fairness, consent, privacy and correct attribution of other people's work.

Practical experience

How it is practised.

Participants produce real pieces: an interview, a written article, a short recorded item. Work is reviewed against professional criteria and revised.

Ethical questions are examined through the participants' own material, where consent, accuracy and fairness are immediate rather than theoretical.

Career relevance

Why it matters for work.

Communication capability supports careers in media and in the communication functions of organisations of every type. For entrepreneurs and youth leaders, it is how work becomes visible and credible.

Participant experience

Production based and deadline driven. Participants should expect to publish or present work rather than only discuss technique.

Programme delivery

How it is delivered.

  • Workshops and practical production sessions
  • Assignments with editorial feedback
  • Online sessions and remote submission
  • Input from media practitioners where available

Expected outcomes

What participants should take away.

These are development outcomes. AYCADO does not promise employment, certification or any guaranteed result.
  • Produced pieces of work suitable for a portfolio

  • Stronger interviewing, writing and production capability

  • A clear ethical standard for communication work

  • Greater ability to make good work visible

Why this work matters

The wider significance.

Africa's development will be shaped by the judgement of people who are currently young. Leadership, enterprise, digital capability and creative thinking are therefore not optional extras. They determine whether a generation waits for opportunity or builds it.

Investing in this area produces returns beyond any individual participant. A young person who can lead a team, start something, communicate publicly or solve a problem with the tools available becomes a source of opportunity for others in their community.

Partner with AYCADO

How organisations can take part.

These are pathways we are open to. AYCADO does not claim existing partnerships it has not established.
Knowledge partnerships
Enterprises, technology organisations and media institutions can share practitioner expertise with young people preparing to work in those fields.
Mentorship partnerships
Founders, managers and specialists can guide young people through the practical decisions their ambitions require.
Community engagement
Partners can create platforms where young leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs present work and receive credible feedback.

Support this work

Where support makes a difference.

AYCADO is building carefully and publishes no funding figures. Support is directed at delivery, access and quality.
Youth scholarships and participation support
Enable young people with capability but limited means to join leadership and enterprise development cycles.
Digital learning access
Support the tools, connectivity and platforms that digital and enterprise learning depend on.
Programme sponsorship
Resource the design and delivery of leadership, innovation and enterprise development work over a full cycle rather than a single session.
